Dear Shawn and Dylan,
I appreciate you taking the time to
write. Looks like yall are in a pickle. You want a wild hog dog,
but dont have any wild hogs to train him on.
First, I dont know how much help
im going to be to you. But, I feel strongly you are going to have to do
one of the following things.
1. Go ahead and try your dog on
the tame hogs you have access to. Keep the hog moving if the dog
doesnt bark or looses interest. If he doesnt bark at all dont get
discouraged.
2. Try real hard to find you some
hog hunter in your area that possibly might have a bay pen to use. If he
has a dog that will just bay, ask him kindly if he would put it in the pen
with yours to get yours started.
3. You might try to find someone
that is near you that happens to put on baying contest from time to time and
tell him your dilemma. Possibly he might let you come over some weekend
when hes not putting on a contest.
4. If there are some other hog
hunters in your area you can meet, talk to them and see if they might have an
open spot on a hunt sometime. Offer to bring lunch, or the drinks,
a sack of dog food, or a tank of gas or something like that. Some hog
hunters dont mind bringing along new comers. some do mind and are a very tight
group. Theres so much back stabbin that goes on concerning taking
someone to a hunting spot and then the invitee coming back and hunting the
spot or trying to steal the spot. Its just up to the individual
you meet on how he feels about things.
5. If you dont know about any bay pens in your
area, contact Bayed Solid, you can get their email address off of Baydog's
links page since Baydog put the small page together for them. Baydog.com
also list upcoming baying contest when the promoter calls or writes in
requesting an add be put on.
I dont know how much help I was, but trying to train a hunting
dog with out the game to train it on is almost impossible. Your just
going to have to find you some hogs to try him on somewhere is the bottom
line.
