Dear Game Hog,

Thanks for taking the time to write me.   Can curs
and hounds as catch dogs, can they take a lickin and
keep on tickin like a pit and an American bulldog?

Well, first off, in choice, the pit and the AMD would
be my first choice over a cur bred dog.  However,
there are some gene strains of both cur and hounds
that would certainly do it just as good.   When I say
cur, I'm talking about the two that I am most familar
with in my part of the country-Blackmouth and
catahoula.

Just like all pits and american bulls dont have "the
heart", there are alot more of the cur and hounds that
dont have the heart to be a REAL-HOLD TO THE END
catchdog.   In order to find one, you will have to go
on a search.  I would strongly suggest that you get
one that has hogs under his belt in the woods before
making your choice.  I would not put my trust in
raising a puppie hoping he would have it.

A fella who hunts with me alot named Kevin and the
man I buy my feed from named Rocky and a hunting
friend of mine in east texas named Jimbo all have cur
dogs that are "HOLD TO THE END" catchdogs.  There are
alot more out there besides these.   Theres a man that
was one of the big time breeders of the southern
blackmouth cur named Howard Carnathan that bred
blackmouths for years and he writes an article pretty
much every month in Full Cry I think its title,
"Southern Blackmouth Curs, the ultimate catch dog".
Now I wouldnt say the same thing as the title, but, as
I mentioned earlier, there are some out there that are
dandys.

Good Luck hunting, and it seems you might need to
invest in a good vest for your catch dogs if you
havent already.   Might help with lowering your
expenses for staple guns.  Im sure the dogs wouldnt
mind either...  :-)

Remember, collar up, vest up and protect those dogs
and they will take care of you.

See ya,

Jim
