Dear Richard,
Thanks for writing. I appreciate the question. Moms
and Bulldogs....
This is an interesting question to me and is kind of comical. Im not
saying that because of anything to do with you or your moms request.
Its because of MY OWN mom. The reason I say this is because, in recent
months I have moved. And am currently keeping and kenneling my dogs
on
property behind my parents home. And to my knowledge, my bull dog
Hillary, is the first bull dog ever to live on their land. My moms
wishes over the years were to not have bull dogs for pets. I think
since my mom has now become aquatinted with Hillary, she has come to
like her and is getting comfortable with her being around. Hillary,
even tho she catches hogs real well, is not aggressive in any manner
towards other dogs or people and never has been. I cant say that
statement about all bulldogs we have used over the years, but I can say
that about her. The truth be known, if it weren't for having
"Jerry"
the cat in my house, I would instead have Hillary for a house dog.
So I guess you can say, I've experienced the problems your having with
your mom at my own home when I was younger. As a father my self, Im
going to say this in her defense--as long as your living under her roof
or using her property where she lives to kennel or house your dogs, you
should honor her wishes on not having a bull dog. Only other thing I
could suggest is get a six week old pup and raise it with her watching
it grow up and be raised correctly.
I personally think the majority of bulldogs get a bad rap. Not the fact
of the items we hear about in the papers or on the news that are truly
horrible, for those dogs, its to late. But I just personally feel that
a high percentage of them become "non friendly's" on how they were
raised.
To go back to trying to help you. All breeds have dogs that are
catch
dogs. If your mom wont let you have a bull dog, get you a dog of
another breed that is. I would think you could find you a blackmouth
cur or catahoula of the right genetics that would work just fine.
Ask
around for one. You would have better luck in finding one that is
already catching in the woods and paying that extra cost rather than
getting a young one and HOPING it will catch when it grows up.
Good luck in your search for a catch dog and give your mom a hug and a
kiss. Moms deserve it for putting up with us for us anyway...haha.
