Dear Andrew,

Thanks for writing me the question.  Can hounds do it all?  I guess
that's your question.  Well, as in all dog breeds weither they be
hounds, curs or what evers, there are some that can do it all.   But the
question is, Can the ones you have do it all.   Only experience and
seeing them at work can tell.

Ive seen and owned dogs of all breeds and mixes that either could
strike and bay, but wouldn't lay a tooth on a hog as far as catching
goes....   I've seen others that would strike and catch but wouldn't bay
a lick.  I personally have one gyp that if turned out alone to strike,
will find the hog and stop him and bay till she gives out.   But the
same gyp, if you send her to a bay where the others dogs have already
got one stopped, you would swear she's a straight catch dog.

Not every hound is a hog dog, just as not every cur/other breed is or
will make a hog dog.  They have to have the HEART to be one.    Just as,
not every hound is cold nosed and not every cur dog is hot nosed.  The
reason I mention this is because you asked if they can do it all.....
The answer is I HE/SHE HAS IT IN THEM, weither it be from genetics or
what ever.   If I want a prospective puppy or young dog I raise or buy
to be a catch dog, his parents or grand parents need to be or have been
that way for him/her to have a chance on being that way.   Only a very
very small percentage of dogs will be catch dogs unless its in his genes
to be that way.

Hope this helps answer your question.  Thanks again for writing
