Dear Cowdog,

Thanks for taking the time to write.    Breaking dogs off cattle.   Well, maybe I wont have to be so long winded on this answer.

Ive always kinda said that i would much rather have a dog trash on a deer than on cattle..... haha    Those cattle seem to get quite upset sometimes when your trying to call that baying dog off.   Ive had cows swim rivers, we lost a 10,000 acre hunting spot due to dogs baying cattle, and most ranchers wont let you set foot on their property if you dogs go and bay their gentle momma cows.

Im only going to suggest to you two ways.   Both concern a shock collar.   The best way Ive found is to find a friend who is working cows in a pen.   Put your shock collar on the dog the nite before.   While the fellas are working the cattle, tie your dog to the pen.   ANY TIME HE EVEN ACTS LIKE HE WANTS TO BARK OR GIVE INTEREST TO THE COW, you give him a suggestion that it is not in his best interest to do so by pushing the red button.   wont take to long for his learning ability to understand that cows are bad for his health.

Next, use the same shock collar and go out and actually turn him loose around cattle or walk thru cattle,   give him the reminder if he shows any interest.

This is what I think are the best ways of breaking a dog off cattle.   Im sure other folks have better ways, but I've had pretty good luck with it.

Jim
