Hello Nathan,

Thanks so much for taking time to write. In your question you stated “I have two year and half Catahoula curs and one brindle plott, will these two breeds of dogs hunt good together." Sounds like you are definitely on the right track for finding the right combination of hunting dogs.

Well, at least my opinion it sounds good. I’ve hunted that sort of combination for years and it’s worked real well for me. I like the Catahoula curs and the plotts. I even like and presently use a cross of the two breeds. Of course no matter what the breed or cross, the bottom line is the dogs their selves. Will they make the cut? The answer lies with you and you alone since you will be the one hunting them. The only problem I have run into when using a hound running with curs is if the hound runs open mouth. A lot of curs can’t handle an open mouth dog, and wont honor his locate or bay bark since he barks on track. You will just have to weigh the situation yourself and see how your dogs react. If your hound does run open mouth and you have the for mentioned problem. Try this, simply turn the hound loose to locate. Once he is definitely baying his locate bark, at that time, turn the curs loose to him. I’ve done this many-many times with positive results. Just a word of caution, if your hound does run open mouth, and you go hunting with other pure cur dog hunters, be prepared to hear trash talk about your hound running open. The bottom line is, to me, you have a good combination of dogs. One should have a cold nose and the other have hot nose which is the best of both worlds. No matter what, If the dogs please YOU, that’s what counts the most.

Good luck with your dogs,

Jim
