Dear Erica,
I appreciate getting a question from our northern neighbors way up in Canada. Hello..... Your question is- "I have a 48# pit and a 30# pit that are 18 and 13 months old, are they to old to start them hunting?" To answer you simply and quickly,,,,,,No, they are not to old. I had a friend of mine that aquirred two pit bull dogs from a motor cycle gang. Each of the bull dogs was around 8 or 9 years old. Both caught hard as a rock the first time they were tried on a hog. I have found that age on any dog doesnt really make a difference on if they can do it or not, they eiether got it in them to do or they don't. As far as what to hunt in Canada besides wild hogs, I dont have a clue.....hahaha But if you ever do decide or find a place to hunt wild hogs, make sure you get at least a 4" wide cut collar for them. A vest would even be better. The bull dogs job is to catch, and a catch dog is like being on the front line of the infentry in a war, they take the most punishment. As far as big enough, I personally like my catch dogs to be somewhere between 50 and 75#. How ever I use to own a red nosed gyp that was 30# that would catch excellent, but I used her only with another dog. Also, the best catch dog that my nephew ever owned we called Chompers I, he was 35# on his heaviest day. To make it plain and simple, he was awsome. However, something in the back of my mind just tells me that a 30# bull dog even tho he will catch hard is out matched sometime with a big bad boar over 200#. I've seen a bull dog catch and be locked on and the hog simply ran off with the pit like he was a knat hanging on his ear.
Good luck with your dogs and finding game to hunt,
Jim
