Hello Chris,
Thanks for writing.   Your question is, "do I think 5 curs and 3
catahoulas are enough to catch a hog?"

Well Chris, I think 8 dogs are plenty.  Its not my style of hunting
tho.    I try not an hunt/use that many dogs at one time.  Ive found
the more dogs you have on a bad boar, the more that get hurt.  I try
real hard and not have but 3 dogs on a hog once hes bayed, and I like
to have two catch dogs on leashes on a hunt.   I dont always have to
use both catchdogs, but I save one as a back up.  99% of our hogs are
caught with either the bay dogs when told to catch or with the help
of one catch dog.  I just like the security of a back up catch dog at
hand.  My friend Charlie, takes 4.  Ive never taken or even owned
that many grown bull dogs at one time...hahaha

I understand what you say, when you mention that your hog is tore
up by using these 8 dogs and then 3 catch dogs.  Thats pretty much
like going Rabbit hunting with a with a 458 winchester.  Its an over
kill in most instances, but thats just my opinion.

My suggestion would be for you to put a dog on the ground and your
friend to put a dog on the ground to go find the hog, and once they
do, each of you turn one dog each to the bay.   Both of you walk your
bull dogs in, and alternate on who releases their catch dog.   I
think that would help in your problem.

If more dogs are needed, they are still at the truck.  But if their
not, you have fresh dogs to put on the ground for the next hog.

But hog hunting styles are up to you.  And this is a style alot of
people use by having a large number of dogs on the ground.  I just
dont do it that way on my hunts, but respect the opinions of the
people who do.  Its kinda like Fords vs Chevys.   Some like Fords and
some like Chevys.  Me, I like a GMC.....hahaha

Good luck to you and your dogs,

Jim
