Thanks for writing. Dogs biting, then backing off and
barking, is
this baying or catching?
If you are asking me if these dogs are catch dogs, the answer is no.
Catch dogs only have one job and that is to catch and not let go.
Most people want bay or strike dogs that will stop a hog by biting it
on the rear end if its running where he will sit down. At that time
most want their dogs to step back and just bay the hog until they
arrive. Unless of course the hog takes off again, and the dogs
should nip the hog on the rear again to stop him.
Another type dog is just a rough or gritty dog. This dog is more
aggressive than the others, unless its a big hog, they usually catch
them.
I just know this, its been my experience that the rougher the dog the
more the dog gets hurt and needs attention. I sure wouldnt put all
my money and time in a top strike/find dog that was real rough. The
chances of him being around in 3 years is very low if hes rough.
These are the type dogs that I know of.
1. Strike/find dog. This is your money dog. With out having a
dog
who can find one, a person is just wasting their time running around
in the woods. I dont care if this dog ever puts his mouth on a hog
if hes my main find/strike dog. I want this dog to not have to be
at the vets, or having to stay at home letting wounds heal. I want
this one to be on the ground hunting any time I hit the woods.
2. Bay dogs.. These are dogs that maybe arent good find dogs,
but
where they shine, is when they hear that strike dog find a hog and
they perk up there ears and take off like rockets to go to the hog.
These are the dogs that should be stopping the hog from running off
and have him bayed for me to get there with the catch dog.
3. Pack dog..... This is a dog that will stop a hog that will pack
up and stay with your strike/find dog. He doesnt even have to be
able to find a thing on his own, but he must be willing to stay side
by side with the find/strike dog.
4. Catch dog.... One job and one job only,, to catch the hog and not
let go.
