Hello Justin,
I appreciate you taking the time to write me.   Yep, I know your pappa...   Ive known him for somewhere near 30 years.   I use to see him all the time over at the Round-up over at Simonton.  He was/is a good cowboy.   Seems your stepping right into his footsteps in Rodeoing.   Pat even knew my X-wife Patti back when I was married many moons ago.  Hes a fine gentleman.

Im glad your also getting into hog hunting.   Since I dont rodeo anymore, I guess its the next best thing of getting that adreniline rush that I experienced so well back in my rodeo days while riding bucking horses.   It seems your question is basically... Can I find any good dogs that are free?

Well, hopefully this will help answer that question.   Ive been very fortunate over the years to own some dogs Ive been very proud to call my own or had the great experience to watch work that someone else owned.    And believe it or not, some of the best ones other than the ones I bred and raised were "give me or free" dogs.    Now thats not to say they all will be that way, because Ive gotten some dogs that were give me dogs that werent worth the time it would take to cull them much less feed them.    But all in all, I guess I could sum up the good ones this way.   Ive had some very good friends just give me dogs and they were mainly puppies.  But almost all of these were bred to be hog dogs.    Ive also traded for some.   After you get into this awhile, you will meet lots of people, especially at our local bayings that are different than the bayings in other parts of Texas and beyond.   You see, the bayings we have around here in our area are made up of mainly true hog hunters.   The dogs you see at these are mainly true woods dogs that were just brought over.    Just get around and meet people....its easy to get a conversation started...you simply go over by where they are parked and say "thats a nice looking dog"   and you immediately have made a new friend......  smile

Ive gotten a number of dogs from the pound, both in Angleton and in Freeport.  Just weed thru them, try to get the "cowdoggish" looking ones.   But be prepared to cull the ones who dont work out.   Dont pawn them off on someone else, thats the easiest way I know to get a bad reputation other than trespassing or stealing dogs.

The good free ones are out there,  sometimes you can get a dog ready to start for practically nothing since we seem to all have a nasty habit of collecting too many dogs.....haha

I wish you good luck in your search,  I'll try to remember ya the next time I have more than I can handle at one time....

Jim

PS:  tell Pat hello for me...
