Hello Red Man,
Thanks so much for taking the time to write me a question.   Whats the best breed of catch dog?   My goodness, what a question...haha

Ive written articles before addressing catch dogs.  There are a number of breeds of catch dogs ive either seen used or used my self.   The ones who stand out are the pit, the american bull dog, the Dogo, the staffordshire terrier and a catching cur dog of some kind.

To keep this simple, and to keep from writing a 4000 word response about each breeds pros and cons,  I will simply say this.....all of the above are good catch dogs.  There are people out there that swear about each one of them and promote each one of them.  So the bottom line is, what ever the breed you choose, he above all has to please you.

I dont like a catch dog, that has an attitude problem around other dogs or other people is the main thing I ask for in reguards to their personality.   In reguards to catching ability, I want a catch dog that has some speed, who is alert, who hears and listens for the dogs good. and one that will grab hold of an ear and hold till hell freezes over or I break him off one with a breaking stick, I also dont like a dog who chews when hes caught.   I want him to lock on, place his body to the side of the hog out of the way of the tusk and hold till I get there.   I personally dont like a dog that will let go on command...  With all the commotion that sometimes goes on when a hog is being legged, thrown down etc...  I sure dont want to worry about what I say and the dog will let go...   Thats not a pleasant thought.     I want a catch dog that has one job and one job only in the world and will do that job to the absolute best of his ability even if it cost him his life..   Thats a must in a catch dog that lives at my house.

Now, the breed of my choice.  I dont know if this is the breed of my choice, because its the dog and what he does that counts in the end.   But if you can ever find you a pit thats around 50-60 Lbs, with a good attitude, that has a little speed, hes hard to beat.   They are realitively cheap to buy, even as older trained dogs, they are easy to find (at least the breed is, not necessarily the good attitude ones), and they are natural catch dogs.

I looked for over two years for a white pit... they arent any better than any others, its just I like a white catch dog.   To find the dog I was wanting wasnt an easy task.   I could find white ones pretty easy, especially in the american bull dogs, but I wanted a white pit bull terrier, full blooded, that had a large head and jaws, good strong permanent teeth, that I could load up in the back of my truck with 4 or 5 other dogs and him not say a word to another dog or a human.  Well, after over two years of searching, I finally found one.   He's tied out my window right now.   It was hard to find the one I wanted but I finally lucked into him.   he catches hard and the only thing he doesnt like or does like as the case may be is cats and hogs....haha   I can deal with both and not look back...haha   I was very lucky to find Chompers II.   I should have some puppies out of him soon.

Im not saying pits are the best type of catch dog, but there are very few dont catch a hog.

Good hunting,

Jim
