This is a story about the first time a caught a hog. Me and my friend Jim met about a year ago, we got on the subject of hogs, he started telling me stories about this ranch that he goes out to and catches hogs all night long. I asked him if he thought he could take me out there sometime, if he didn't mind. He told me that the person that owns the land only allows him to go out on their 32,000 acres, (thinking he is making this all up) but he said he would ask them anyway.
The next evening he call me up, you ready to go, get some old clothes on, I'll be there in 10 min. Soon after we were on our way. He had brought along 5 of his dogs, two bay dogs, three catch dogs, he said one of the catch dogs were in training, sounded good to me. soon we arrived at the ranch, we no more got threw the gates and three doe and a buck crossed right in front of the truck, that got me going, he told me to culm down, that we were going to the back of the property, because out of the seven year going out there he had never gone all the way back, because he was always by himself, I said lets go! He did tell me one thing as a rule once you get a hold you don't let go.
When we finally got back there, we released one bay dog, to try and wind a hog, it couldn't have been 15 min and buddy the first bay dog, started running one, Jim told me to let the other one out, like lickidy split she (lady bug) was gone, a few min later we could here her to. Them dogs ran back and forth until they made it to a giant head, and to let you know this is in Florida, so in this head you have gators, water moccasins, and who knows what all, anyway Jim says let get the catch dogs and go get em! as soon as we got to the edge of the trees we let the catch dogs go, I really did not know what to think, the sounds of hogs, lots of hogs, I'll admit it I was a little nerves, he said stay by me and don't drop your flash light , and off he went, and me right behind him, there were hogs and dogs everywhere ,one dog had a hog in a creek, Jim said that looks like a good first hog for you, I said what? He said he is a small one don't think about it and go in there and get him, as he was running the other way to get another hog that a dog was latched onto, so I did what he said and jumped in, and what do you think was the first thing I did? Dropped the flash light. (great) I had a little light from the moon, but very little, in the meantime I had a hold of one leg, boy it sure was a big leg too! then I grabbed the other, I think it turn out to be alot bigger then what Jim thought ,so by now its on, I fought with him about 10 min trying to get him to dry land, just as I got close I realized I could not move, my feet sunk almost to my knees, suddenly he turned and so did I, over I went right down in the water I went, but you know I never let go, anyways, I finally got my footing and got him on land, I still had my dog there, latched on, I got the hog flipped, had my knee on his head and pretty much collapsed on top of him I couldn't move, I was so drained, I yelled for Jim, he said he was coming, when he got to me he could not believe how big he was and said he was sorry for leaving me, but while he was gone he caught 5 other hogs himself. He said mine was the biggest out of the 6, mine turned out to be about 255 pounds, and the dog that stayed with me turned out to be the dog in training, and I swear that dog saved me a good woppen.
I have probably caught over a hundred since this has happened, I am hooked! I hope you enjoyed my adventure, just remember there is nothing in this world more exciting then grabbing a hold of one of those big hogs and taking him out.
p.s. I found my flash light about 40 min later, on the bottom of the creek, still on.
HAPPY HOG HUNTING!
